Large historical print depicting "Belisarius". Belisarius was a great Byzantine general (Germania, on the border between Thrace and Illyria, c. 505 - Constantinople 565), distinguished for his valor; he was given supreme command of operations against the Persians by Justinian and defeated them at Dara (530). Upon returning to his homeland, he fell into disgrace, becoming poor and blind: In the figure, he is recognized by one of his soldiers while receiving alms from a passerby.
