Iconography of the Ecce Homo or Salvator Mundi
Period: 16th century
Oil painting on canvas, Tuscan school, depicting Christ with the crown of thorns (iconography of the Ecce Homo or Salvator Mundi), enclosed in an oval medallion with the Latin inscriptions "AMOR IHS MEUS" at the top and "CRUCIFIXUS" at the bottom.
The face of Jesus Christ with the crown of thorns and a red mantle were devotional subjects widespread between the 17th and 18th centuries, linked to phrases such as "Amor meus crucifixus est", meaning "My love has been crucified".
The carved and gilded frame is of a later period, around the early 18th century.
